Fractures Of The Upper Arm Flashcards
What are the different shoulder girdle injuries?
Stereo clavicular dislocations
Anterior dislocation
Retrosternal (posterior dislocation)
What are sternoclavicular dislocation?
Usually uncommon
Can be anterior or posterior dislocation
Anterior could be caused by a fall
Posterior direct blow to the end of the clavicle
What is a objective examination of the SC dislocation?
Palpable bump anteriorly or depression posteriorally
Active Rom Decreases of adduction and elevation
What is treatment for the anterior dislocation?
Pressure over medial end of clavicle
Sling for 2 to 3 weeks (straping of upper arm)
Shoulder retraction
Use of monkey chain with involved arm
What is treatment of the retrosternal dislocation?
Reduction
Referral to orthopedic surgeon
What is the fracture of the clavicle?
Common in children and adults
Fall on outstretched hand
Swelling and pain of clavicle
Affected arm supported by other arm
What is the Treatment of the fracture of the clavicle?
Triangular sling under the clothes
Or figure of eight bandage to reduce deformity and pain
Functional results
What could be the post surgery complications?
Mal union
Non union
What are the recognized grades of acronio clavicular joint injuries?
Grade 1 sprain
Grade 2 Subluxation
Grade 3 Dislocation
What is Grade 1 of the acromio clavicular fracture?
There is a local tenderness and no displacement
What is the treatment for grade 1 ?
Arm in sling and anti inflammatories
What is a grade 2?
The joint capsule is torn
The coinoid and trapezoid ligaments are still in tact and a mild prominence of the end of the clavicle
What is the treatment of grade 2 ?
Analgesia
Rest in triangle sling until pain has settled
What is a grade 3?
Complete tear of joint capsule and coinoid and trapezoid ligaments tear and outer end of clavicle displaces superiorily or posterior
What is treatment for grade 3?
Same as subluxation arm in a triangular sling with analgesia also exercises in supine not more than 90degrees
