Transverse, oblique, spiral, comminuted, impacted, compression, greenstick, depressed, displaced
Transverse fracture
A horizontal break across the bone
Oblique fracture
a diagonal/oblique break across the width and along the longitudinal axis of the bone
spiral fracture
a spiral break that occurs along the axis of long
comminuted fracture
bone breaks into multiple fragments
impacted fracture
occurs when the broken ends of the bone are driven into each other
compression fracture
bone is crushed and usually occurs in the vertebrae
greenstick fracture
a break on one side of a long bone and does not extend all the way through the bone
depressed fracture
when the bone has been hit by a sharp object
intra-articular fracture
a fracture that extends into the joint space
extra-articular fracture
a fracture that does not extend into the joint space
avulsion fracture
occurs when a small fragment of bone attached to a tendon/ligament gets pulled away from the main part of the bone
Bennett fracture
a fracture of the base of the thumb, resulting from forced abduction of the 1st MC
jones fracture
base of 5th metatarsal fracture, caused by sudden force or twisting away from body
lisfranc fracture
occurs when there are either torn ligaments or broken bones in the midfoot area of one or both feet. metatarsal becomes displaced
