Fracture Management Flashcards
1
Q
What are the four steps of fracture management?
A
- Anatomic reduction (realignment) of fracture fragments.
- Stabilisation of fragments using splinting/cast/surgery.
- Maintaining neurovascular supply.
- Encourage early rehabilitation.
2
Q
What are the types of traction methods and who are they used for?
A
- Skin traction - adhesive strapping to attach a load to the limb.
- Skeletal strapping - fixed (weight on pulley), balance (limb weight balanced against load), gallows (buttocks rise above head, children under 2)
- Commonly used in children
3
Q
What are the indications for open reduction internal fixation?
A
- Failed conservative management
- Two fractures in one limb
- Bilateral identical fractures
- Intra-articular fractures (joint involved)
- Displaced unstable fracture
- Open fracture
4
Q
What are the four methods of internal fixation?
A
- Plates
- Screws
- Intramedullary nails - centre of long bones
- K wires - closed reduction and percutaneous/internal fixation
5
Q
What is external fixation used for and how is it performed?
A
- Good for burnt skin and open fractures
2. Pins/wires placed away from zone of injury then inserted into bones directly
