fractional distillation Flashcards
fractional distillation
the process in which the various hydrocarbons components of crude oil are separated into samples, based on their different boiling points.
petroleum gas
1-4 carbons, boiling range less than 40, used for heating, cooking and making plastics
naptha
5-9 carbons, boiling range 60-100, intermediate to making gasoline
gasoline
5-12 carbons, boiling range 40-205, liquid motor fuel
kerosene
10-18 carbons, boiling range 175-325, liquid fuel for jet engines and tractors
gas oil
12-19 carbons, boiling range 250-350, used for diesel fuel and heating oil
lubricating oil
20-50 carbons, boiling range 300-370, used for motor oil, grease and other lubricants
heavy gas or fuel oil
20-70 carbons, boiling range 370-600, used for liquid industrial fuel
residuals
70+ carbons, boiling range greater than 600, used for asphalt/bitumen, tar, waxes
