England for General Elections
FPTP Advantages
- simple ballot system easy to understand - quick also
- often can produce single party governance
- prevents extremist parties from gaining large amount of seats [UKIP 12% votes 1 seat] again in 2019 gained 0 seats
FPTP Disadvantages
- disproportionate number of votes to seats
- designed for a 2 party system
- safe seats = wasted votes [2019 g.e 56% votes wasted bc of safe seats]
Does the ENG public want a change
Yes however when there was the AV referendum in 2011 there was a 42% and 67% said NO turnout highlighting their wasn’t a high demand for change
What are the + of having a single party gov
enables decisive policy shifts to take place which may be more difficult under coalition
1948 labour bring in NHS 1997 Blair the ‘third way’ [partnership of public and private sector]

In recent yrs fptp failed to diliver strong single party gov
2010 hung parliament + form a coalition Tory/lib-dem cam/clegg
2017 may deal with the DUP - ‘zombie parliament’ little was done
