Piriformis muscle

A
  • pt prone with pillow under abdomen
  • doc seated on the side of df
  • doc monitors at df tissue at piriformis insertion on greater trochanter
  • doc flexes pts knee and drops pts flexed knee and though off the table, allowing hip to flex forward until motion is felt at monitoring hand
  • doc adducts and IR the pts knee until motion is felt
  • induce compression force at the knee toward the monitoring hand, feeling for release of tissues
  • hold for 3-4 seconds and return to neutral/release compression
  • reassess piriformis df

Gluteus maximus muscle

A
  • pt prone with pillow under abdomen
  • doc seated on the side of df
  • doc monitors at df
  • doc flexes pt’s knee into full abduction to rest knee on doc’s thigh farthest from the patient
  • doc raises their heel off the floor until motion is felt at monitoring hand, this induces extension
  • doc pushes pt’s knee externally (or pulls pt’s ankle medially) causing external rotation at the hip
  • hold for 3-4 seconds waiting for tissue relaxation, release hip positioning , and return to neutral
  • reassess gluteal df
