Fowler Spiritual Development Flashcards
Human attempt to make sense of the self in connection to and with the external world
Spirituality
Conscious intellectual agreement with particular doctrines or ideologies
Belief
Many beliefs and practices of a collective group of people over a period of time
Religion
Underlies both belief and religion but is also inclusive of secular worldviews; “our way of finding coherence in and giving meaning to the multiple forces and relations that make up our lives”
Faith
- Based on the relationship between infants and parents (similar to trust vs. mistrust)
- View of God comes from view of parents: do they have a good or bad relationship with parents? This affects the view of God
Pre-Stage – Primal Faith
- Comes when language does (around 2 yo)
- Child constructs images of God through pictures and stories
- Characterized by imagination
Stage 1 – Intuitive-Projective Faith
- Faith in childhood
- Doesn’t reflect on faith or ask questions about faith
- Very into narrative and story-telling faith
Stage 2 – Mythic Literal Faith
- Faith in adolescents
- Religion is meaningful, but doesn’t apply to life
- Thinks about faith abstractly, not critically
Stage 3 – Synthetic Conventional Faith
- 20 – 40ish age range
- Self-authored faith; takes faith individually and creates personal meaning
- Values are coherent
- CROSSROADS of faith
Stage 4 – Individuative – Reflection Faith
- 40ish – ? Takes place in mid-life
- Realizes complexity of life and becomes more accepting of other faiths
- Their faith is still their own even though other views are accepted
Stage 5 – Conjunctive Faith
- This is a hard phase to get to (examples of MLK, Ghandi, etc)
- Decentralizes self
- Only achieved through partnership with Spirit
Stage 6 – Universalizing Faith
Name 3 Transitions between each stage:
- Disengagement from a particular relational context
- Dis-identification is the loss of one’s sense of self that accompanies disengagement
- Disenchantment involves parting with one’s previous view of reality and experiencing feelings of grief, loss, confusion, and in some cases, liberation
- Disorientation is the culmination of the other three aspects which leads to the neutral zone
- Eventually explore a new beginning
