Q

What are some main ‘rules’ of voice leading?

A

Smooth writing - go to next nearest note and repeat note in same part
The leading note goes to tonic in next chord (raise leading note in minor)
Avoid consecutive/parallel 5ths + 8ves
Parts should not cross each other
Avoid doubling the 3rd (and never double leading note)
When chord roots are a 2nd apart the upper parts move contrary to Bass
Chord IV follows I but never V
