Nation
- different things to different ppl
- related to something in feeling & minds of people or to an internal connection to others
- shared sense of belonging
- when ppl want to self government
Nationality
- Status of belonging to a nation
- type of relationship
Nation - State
- Territory w/ INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED borders and politically organized group of ppl under one sovereign government
- often countries u see on a map
Sovereign State
- internationally recognized boundaries
- economic activity and organized economy
- Foreign trade, domestic trade, and issues its own money
- power to influence people
- government that provides public services, infrastructure, and policing power
- no other state has power on its territory
- external recognition
Patriotism
- Love for a nation or nation-state, pride in nations culture and achievements
- individual placing interest of nation before themselves
- love and respect for national symbols (flags, landmarks, cities, etc)
- sense of loyalty
Linguistic Nationalism
- A language is able to create a sense of belonging.
- creates shared worldview
- creates mindset if ppl, language influences how they see the world
Ethnic Nationalism
Nation where ppl share same ethnic characteristics (racial, culture, linguistic)
Cultural Nationalism
Nation that shares same way of life (traditions, morals, stories)
- ex. symbols, myths, famous people
Religious Nationalism
A nation that shares religious beliefs
Geographic Nationalism
A nation where people share the same land, live in the same area. They create their own way of living.
Relationship to Land Nationalism
Nation that gives significance to a certain area
Spiritual Nationalism
A nation that shares spiritual beliefs
Political / Civic nationalism
Nation that shares same laws, government style and civic holidays
Xenophobia (spartans)
- dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries
- Foreigners unwelcome and citizens barred from moving
- people were scared that citizens would pick up strange habit of others who have different political systems
Spartan Ideology
- Warrior personality of self-sacrifice for greater good of community, duty, discipline
- Patriotism above all else
- Spartans own belief in their ideology was absolute
- No obstacle that cant be overcome
Self-Determination/National self determination
Power to control yourself. National self determination is power of nation to make their own decisions
Sovereignty
Political authority to control your decisions (king)
Collective conciousness
Awareness or internal consciousness shared by many people
Royal Commission
- tool used by governments to deal w/ complicated issues
- made from oka crisis
Reconciliation
Mending relationships by making one view or belief compatible with another
Cultural Pluralism
- Many nations living together in one country
- Respect for other beliefs
Reasonable Accommodation
Adapting to religious and cultural practices of minorities as long as these practices do not violate rights and freedoms
Non-nationalist loyalties
- Loyalty that does not involve a nation
Idealogy
System of ideas, beliefs or way of thinking
Constitution
a legal document that lays rules on which a country, state or political system works
Philosophy
Set of ideas on how to do something or how to live
Parliment
- Assembly w/ power to make laws
- Limited monarchs power
