Q

What are 4 ways that intermolecular forces affect boiling points

A
  1. Size of molecule - Bigger = more electrons therefore a stronger temporary dipole dipole
  2. Polarity - more electronegative atom can cause a permanent dipole dipole
  3. Hydrogen bonding.
  4. Surface area. More surface area = more bonds therefore stronger forces = higher boiling point

17
Q

What are the two main branches of isomers?

A

Constitutional and stereo isomers

18
Q

What is the definition of a conformational isomer

A

An isomer that differs by rotation about a single bond

19
Q

What is the definition of a configurational isomer

A

A configurational isomer is an isomer which requires breaking bonds to be the same

20
Q

What is an enantiomer?

A

An enantiomer is a non- superimposable morror image

21
Q

What is a diastereomer

A

not mirror image but still requires breaking bonds as is a branch of configurational.

22
Q

What is a hydrogen bond?

A

Hydrogen bonding is a type of dipole dipole interaction the dipole interaction is between a slightly negative atom and a slightly positive hydrogen for example O-H
