L2 - local and global
what do we mean with the phrases
mosaic
system
relational
when talking about local/ global
mosaic - world is as a collection of local peoples and places, each one being a piece in a broader global pattern. constructs the local as a bounded area, made distinct through the character of life and land within it. tends to construct the global-scale processes as destructive to that local diversity. criticms - local difference not always destroyed by global level processes often produced by them. political dangers of excusion of non-locals.
(global is portrayed as a collection of smaller locals)
SYSTEM - alternative way of thinking about local/global relations is to see local differences as produced by a global system. differences between places are a result of their location in world, not ‘internal’ factors.
human geog should investigate the processes of differentation through which diversity and inequality are produced.
(gloabl portrayed as a set of relations through which local differences are produced less on collection
