How does a strip foundation work?

A

A strip of concrete foundation follows the external walls, transmitting the buildings load uniformly along the length of the foundation

A deeper strip is applied for weaker soils

It is the most common foundation for low-rise buildings in the uk

How does a raft foundation work?

A

The foundation covers the whole area of the building and sometimes beyond.

It consists of a reinforced concrete slab up to 400mm thick with extra thickness under load bearing elements.

It is used where the bearing capacity of the subsoil is weak or there is a likelihood of subsidence.

How does a pile foundation work?

A

The load from the walls are transferred to a concrete foundation beam and onto the piles. It is used for foundations on shrinking clay or where suitable stratum is only found at lower levels

How do pad foundations work?

A

They are used at the base of columns in framed buildings.

The thickness of the pad should at least be equal to the projection if the slab from the side of the column
