Define nosing
The projecting edge of a step, often rounded or bullnose for safety and to prevent chipping.
It provides extra space for users to place their feet
What is lintel on a building?
A horizontal beam that sits above a door, window or other opening in a wall. It bears the weight of the wall above the opening
What is a wall-tie on a building?
A metal strap or other device used to connect two walls together, preventing them from leaning outwards
What is a flight in a building?
A set of stairs that connects different levels in a building
What is concrete?
A building material made by mixing aggregate with cement and water, it hardens into a strong stone-like material
What is a baluster?
The upright posts that supports the handrail of a staircase
What is an external door?
A door that leads from the inside of a building to the outside
What is pointing?
The process of filling the gaps between bricks or stones in a wall with mortar. Mortar is a mixture of sand, cement and water
What is flashing?
Thin sheets of waterproof material installed to divert water away from walls and roofs
What is a newel post?
The upright support at the end of a staircase or at a turn on a staircase
