Fossils in Strata (Chapter 2) Flashcards
1
Q
stratotype
A
- reference section for a member or a formation
- usually found in a specific location
2
Q
assemblages
A
- collections of fossils found together
- combinations of fossils might be natural communities or together due to sedimentary accumulation
3
Q
biofacies
A
- fossil assemblages indicating depositional environment
- some assemblage are more useful for chronostratigraphic correlation, especially those occur in a short time but were widespread (e.g. trilobites)
4
Q
(bio)zone
A
occurrance of a particular species as it occurs within the rock
5
Q
range zone
A
biostratigraphic interval defined by 2 appearance data (as single or collection of biozones)
6
Q
first appearance datum
A
lowest stratigraphic point a fossil is found in rock
7
Q
last appearance datum
A
highest/youngest stratigraphic point a fossil is found in rock
8
Q
chronostratigraphy
A
- “time-stratigraphy”
- division of geological time into intervals based on type sections in the field
9
Q
“golden spike”/marker point
A
- a particular geologic event preserved in rock
- “instant” in geologic time
- e.g. volcanic eruption
10
Q
biotas
A
- living fauna & flora + microorganism of a particular region
- ex: biota in desert - includes cactus & species of reptiles
- in paleobiology, limited to fossil assemblages
11
Q
endemic species
A
limited to geographic distribution
e.g. cheetahs
12
Q
cosmopolitan species
A
more widespread geographic distribution
e.g. humans
