Fossils Flashcards
Preserved remains or traces of once-living organisms, usually buried by sediment
Fossils
Types of fossils?
Cast, molds, carbon film, trace fossils, petrified fossils, preserved fossils
Takes the same shape of the plant or animal. The space is sometimes filled with mud. The mud hardens and turns into rock. Cast are often made from a mold.
Cast
Looks like the shape of living thing carved into a rock. The inside of the sedimentary rock is a hollow space that takes the shape od the one living thing
Mold
Plant imprints or animal footprints harden and become fossils
Trace Fossils
Scientists that study once living things that no longer exist
Paleontologists
minerals build up and replace all or part of an organism
Petrified fossils
thin coating of carbon on a rock; gases escape from the sediment leaving behind carbon; shows delicate parts (leaves; insects)
Carbon film
Remains of an organism in tar, amber, or ice
Preserved remains
when an organism no longer exists and never will again
extinct
well-tested concept that explains a wide range of observations
scienntific theory
gradual change in living things over long periods of time
evolution
information gathered by paleontologist
