Fossil Fuels.ingrid Flashcards
Alkane
Saturated hydrocarbons that contain only single bonds.
Aromatic hydrocarbons
Unsaturated cyclic compounds made from hydrogen and carbon atoms
Biodegration
Breakdown of a substance by living organisms, such as bacteria and fungi
Biodiesel
Fuel derived from vegetable oil or animal fat, consisting of long chain alkyl esters.
Bioethanol
Ethanol that is made by fermenting the sugar and starch components of plants using yeast.
Biogas
Mixture of gasses produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen.
Carbon neutral
A process that absorbs the same amount of carbon as it generates.
Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of a reaction but is not consumed in the reaction.
Combustion
A rapid reaction with oxygen accompanied by the release of large amounts of energy.
