Fossil Fuels And Combustion Flashcards
When fuels are burned they produce pollutant gases which are released into the atmosphere. What are these three glasses?
Carbon dioxide/ sulphur dioxide/ oxides of nitrogen
Gases which are released when fuels are burned, cause what?
Acid rain and global warming
The sun is the major source of what for the earth?
Energy
When the sun heats up the earths surface what happens in return?
The earths surface radiates heat energy back into space
What are the two consequences for life on Earth if we don’t prevent global warming?
1:) sea levels will rise because the polar ice caps are melting
2;) climate will become unpredictable with some places becoming wetter or drier which will disrupt the growth of food and the ecosystems of plants and animals
What can we do about global warming?
Burn less fossil fuels/ have catalytic converters
How will burning less fossils fuels be good for the planet?
Since they release pollutant gases into the atmosphere lowering the levels of industrial pollution
How will fitting catalytic converters be good for the planet?
Because catalytic converters convert oxides of nitrogen into pure nitrogen which causes no damage to the earth
Substances that release useful amounts of energy when they burn, are called what?
Fuels
