Fossil fuels and biofuels Flashcards
When were the fossil fuels created?
In the carboniferous period ( 360 - 280 million years ago)
What does renewable mean?
Energy from natural sources that is always being replenished . Does not run out .
What does non-renewable mean?
Energy from natural sources that is used up faster than it is replenished . Will run out eventually .
Give 3 examples of fossil fuels .
Coal , Oil and Natural gas
Why do fossil fuels have densities?
Fossil fuels carry a lot of energy in a small space so its easier to carry around .
What are the fossil fuels most important factors and why?
Organic material - Plants and animals ( for example the ocean ) die and get piled at the bottom of the ocean and other materials pile over them
Heat - The earths core starts to heat this up
Pressure - More things pile and the pressure makes them stick tighter and tighter together
Time - Fossil fuels take millions of years to form
What are the disadvantages of fossil fuels?
Pollution - When we burn fossil fuels they release gasses that make it hard for us to breath in the air , which could also make the earth warm and cause global warming
Harm to animals and nature - Getting fossil fuel from the ground can hurt and animals and nature ( imagine getting oil from the ocean and it spilling into the ocean)
Limited supply - We use it up way too fast and they take millions of years to make which mean that we are running out of them
Climate change - The gasses can change the climate which can also hurt the animals.
What do fossil fuels emit?
Carbon dioxide
