Fossil Fuels, acid rain and combustion Flashcards
What are the two effects of global warming?
Sea levels will rise because of ice caps melting and the climate will become unpredictable. This will disrupt crops and animals.
What can we do about the problem?
Burn less fossil fuels and use catalytic converters.
What are the greenhouse gases?
Carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and sulphur dioxide.
What can we use as fuels?
Wood, oil, coal and natural gas.
What is the equation for energy from fuel?
Fuel + oxygen > carbon dioxide + water
What are the effects of burning fuels?
Adds to the enhanced greenhouse effect and the sulphur dioxide makes acid rain.
How is acid rain produced?
It is due to air pollutants dissolving in rain water making it acidic.
How do you see how acidic rain water is?
You see by measuring its PH on the PH scale.
What is a neutral PH?
It is pH 7
What is the pH of acid rain?
PH 3-5.
What are the effects of acid rain?
It can corrode metal because the metal reacts with the acid also it can cause chemical weathering on rock. This erodes them especially rock like like stone as the carbonated rock reacts with the acid.
What is the acid rain cycle?
Selfie dioxide from burning fossil fuels rises and dissolves into rain water making it acid rain. It then falls into lakes killing fish and other water life and falls on trees washing minerals out of soil and killing trees.
What is the equation for complete combustion?
Hydrocarbon + oxygen > carbon dioxide + water
What is global warming?
Heat energy from the sun is absorbed by the earth which then radiates heat energy back into space. However more and more is being trapped by the atmosphere by the greenhouse gases which results in global warming.
What is the equation for incomplete combustion?
Hydrocarbon + oxygen > carbon monoxide +water + carbon
