Fossil Fuels Flashcards
Three main fossil fuels
Crude oil
Gas
Coal
Formation of fossil fuels
Crude oil, gas- Dead Sea creatures buried under sand, over millions of years heat and pressure turns them into oil and gas
Coal- dead plants and trees buried under layers of mud, over millions of years heat and pressure turns them into coal
Alternative energy sources to fossil fuels
Hydrogen
Solar energy
Wind power
Biogas
Hydropower
Importance of fossil fuels to society
Natural gas – cooking and heating (radiators)
Crude oil – petrol and diesels for cars
-Jet fuel for aeroplanes
Coal– generating electricity
Problems with burning fossil fuels
Acid rain- nitrous oxides react with water and oxygen in the atmosphere to form nitric acid, resulting in acid rain
Sulphur dioxide reacts with water and the atmosphere to form sulphuric acid resulting in acid rain
The greenhouse effect- the Sun emits light and heat which is then radiated back to earth
Some of it gets absorbed by CO2 trapping heat energy to the surface and increasing global temperature
Advantages of the energy source hydrogen
Water is the only product
Disadvantages of the energy source hydrogen
It is produced from the electrolysis of water (electricity dividing water into hydrogen and oxygen)
