Fossil Fuels Flashcards
What are the 3 main fossil fuels
Oil, gas, coal
How is oil and natural gas formed
Plants and animals died and fell to the bottom of the sea
The remains were covered by mud
The mud sediment was covered by more sediment so merged together to form rock as temperature and pressure increased.
The remains were chemically altered to from oil and gas
Oil moves up the spaces in the rock and can be obtains by drilling into the rock
How was coal formed
Plants died in swamps
The remains were buried in mud which stopped the remains form rotting
In the absence of oxygen, compressed heat and turned mud to rock and fossils to coal
Why are fossil fuels so important to our society
Energy source
Used everyday
Are fossil fuels renewable
No they are a non renewable source of energy
What happens when you burn fossil fuels
Co2 - burning fossil fuels - enhanced greenhouse affect
Sulphur dioxide - burning fossil fuels - acid rain
Nitrogen oxides - burning fossil fuels - acid rain and smog
Carbon monoxide - cigarettes, fossil fuels - poisonous to living things
Hydrocarbons - burning fossil fuels - acid rain and smog
Smoke - burning fuels - damages lungs
Lead compounds - car exhausts - damages human nervous system
What are alternative fuels
Solar power, nuclear power, wind power, hydrogen and water
What are the advantages and disadvantages of hydrogen as a fuel
Advantage
It produces only water
Disadvantage
Production from the electrosis of water
