FOSS EL4 Flashcards
Kinetic Energy
Energy from movement
Potential Energy
Stored energy because of an object’s position or condition
Electrical Energy
Energy from moving electrions
Type of kinetic energy
Magnetism
A force that attracts or repels
Electromagnet
A magnet made by running electricity through a coil
Creates a magnetic field
Magnetic Pole
The end of a magnemtn where the magnetic force is the strongest
Mechanical Energy
The total energy from movement and position
Kinetic energy + potential energy, type of kinetic energy
Thermal Energy
Heat energy from the movement of particles
Type of kinetic energy
Chemical Energy
Energy stored in chemical bonds
Type of potential energy
Magnetic Energy
Energy stored in a magnetic field
Type of potential energy
Elastic Energy
Energy stored when an object is stretched or compressed
Type of potential energy
Electromagnetic Energy
Energy that travels in waves - low energy radio waves, high energy gamma waves
Type of potential energy
Electromagnetism
The magnetism created by an electromagnet
Generator
A device that converts mechnical energy into electrical energy
Energy Transformation
The process of changing energy from one form to another
I.e. chemical to thermal energy
Energy Transfer
The movement or flow of energy from one object or system to another, such as through work, heat, or radiation
The Law of Conservation of Energy states that…
Energy cannot be created or destroyed
What does the length of the wire coil in an electric motor do to the magnetic field
It makes it stronger
How does the voltage in an electrical motor affect the magnetic field
It makes it stronger

Magnets
A part of an electric motor that creates a steady magnetic field to interact with the armature
Armature
The rotating part of an electric motor that holds wire coils. The magnetic force produces torque (rotation), which makes the armature turn
Shaft
The main rod attached to the armature of an electric motor that transmits rotational energy from the motor to the other device
Coil of Wire
Coils wound around the armature of an electric motor that become electromagnets to create turning
Commutator
A switch in an electric motor that reverses current to assure that the coils push the armature in the same direction
Brushes
Conductive contacts of an electric motor that bring electricity to the armature coils, slowly wear out over time
Cap
End cap to hold components like brushes in an electric motor and keep stability
