Formulating research Flashcards
Define Aim
An “aim” in research is the goal of the research, what is being looked at? What is the end goal?
What is the independant variable
the variable you change.
What is the Dependant variable
the variable you measure.
What is the controlled variable
variables that are kept the same.
Define Extraneous variable
uncontrolled variables other than the IV that might cause unwanted changes in the DV.
Dr. Smith wants to examine whether a new drug increases the problem solving ability of pensioners. Dr. Smith gives a problem solving test to a group of pensioners. One group is then given the new drug while the second group is not given the drug. One week after having completed the test for the first time, the pensioners resit the same test & Dr. Smith measures their scores.
- List all the variables in the experiment
- Independent variable: Administration of the new drug
- Dependent variable: Score on the problem solving test
- Controlled variables: Age of group, same test, same amount of time given to test
- Extraneous variables: Health of individual, intelligence, mood, time test was taken
Define directional hypothesis
Directional: predicts how the IV will impact the DV (always use this
Define non-directional hypothesis
Non-directional: doesn’t not make a prediction about IV & DV.
define inquiry question
An inquiry question is set up similar to a hypothesis, but structures it to ask a question.
