Formulae and Equations Flashcards
where can you find the metals and the non metals in a periodic table?
metals are on the left
non metals are on the right (including hydrogen and helium)
which non-metal elements exist only in diatomic form/in molecules? and what is the mnemonic for it?
-I Bring Clay For Our New House.
iodine, I2 bromine, Br2 chlorine, Cl2 fluorine, F2 oxygen, O2 nitrogen, N2 hydrogen, H2
what is a compound?
-substance formed by the chemical union of two or more elements
what is a covalent bond?
-bond formed between two non metals, where electrons pairs are shared
what does the subscript number show?
-how many atoms of that element appear in the molecule.
what is an ionic bond?
-bond formed between a metal and a non-metal where electrons are transferred from one atom to the other.
what are covalent compounds held by?
-covalent bonds
what are ionic compounds held by?
-ionic bonds
what is an ion?
-a charged particle formed when an atom loses or gains electrons
what is a reactant?
-the substances that react together in a chemical reaction.
what is a product?
the end result/ the result from the chemical reaction
state symbols and their meaning:
(s) = solid
(l) = liquid
(g) = gas
(aq) = aqueous solution
what does an aqueous solution mean?
dissolved in water
what are ions that remain unchanged during a reaction called?
spectator ions
In a balanced ionic equation:
- number of positive and negative charges is the same
- numbers of atoms of each element on both sides of the equation are the same
