why might the mother choose formula feeding?
either have breast fed in past & not been successful or they just don’t want to
Some medication are incompatible with breast milk. What medications are safe?
Ibuprofen; colace; and even percocet are safe to breastfeed on

what types of formulas are fed?
usually milk based
lactose-free, soy, pre-digested are special needs determined by pediatrician
how often are newborns fed formula? why?
6-8 times in 24 hrs (every 3-4 hrs)
Takes longer to digest → important if the baby has any sugar issues
how should/should not baby be fed bottle?
Hold infant “en face”
Should not prop a bottle
Do not put baby to sleep with bottle
what should be done halfway through bottle feed?
burping
what methods of bottle heating are not safe and why?
No microwaves, no stovetops
Can heat unevenly or overheat → do not want to burn baby
how long can you wait before discarding uneaten formula left in the bottle that the baby has already drank from?
must be discarded after 1 hr
how long is powder mixed formula good for only after mixing?
24hrs in the fridge
what is the perfect latch position?
Baby’s nose touching mother’s breast
Mouth wide open around the nipple
Baby tongue should be over lips
Baby’s body positioned against mother’s tummy
should mom feel pain during breastfeeding?
not if there is a good latch; it should just feel like a strong tug
why is patience key with breastfeeding?
Babies don’t take to breastfeeding as easily
but it becomes much easier than formula feeding & pumping but can take a few weeks
should mom switch breasts during breastfeeding?
first we want them to receive all the milk they can from one side. then, burp the baby and switch side
what is inside breastmilk in the beginning and end of feed?
foremilk = skim milk; they get first has lots of fluids,
hindmilk = cream; get at the end of the feeding & contains the fat
during breastfeeding, the baby should NOT have to do what?
turn had towards breast

what position should breastfeeding moms be careful using?
side lying
how often should the baby be breastfed?
8 or more times in 24 hours → babies need to nurse AT least 8 times effectively and more if possible
if it is going on 4 hours since last breastfeeding and baby is asleep what should mom do?
wake them up; change diaper; tickle feet
some babies cluster feed, what should mom do?
always watch clock
if mom says “how do I know my baby is getting enough when I breastfeed?” what should the nurse tell her?
Diapers → tell them how many wet & dirty diapers the baby should have each day
Weight → weigh baby everyday; if they stay in 5-10% range there is not a concern; Baby will grow better on breast milk
Satiety cues → most babies will look satisfied and go to sleep when they have gotten enough feeding
