Forms Flashcards
What is free verse?
Poetry that doesn’t have much meter or rhyme. Free verse poems have structure and organization but do not follow a unified traditional pattern. The poet creates the structure.
What is blank verse?
An old traditional form with set rules: unrhymed lines of ten syllables in iambic pentameter.
Shakespeare uses this form for most of his plays because it sounds like everyday speech.
What is a narrative poem?
A poem that tells a story and often includes elements such as characters, plot, and setting.
What is a sonnet?
A 14-line poem written in iambic pentameter, usually divided into three quatrains (4 lines) and a couplet (2 line stanza).
What is a villanelle?
A highly structured nineteen-line poem with two repeating rhymes and two refrains. It consists of five tercets followed by a quatrain, with the first and third lines of the opening tercet repeated alternately in the last lines of the succeeding stanzas.
