What is free verse?

A

Poetry that doesn’t have much meter or rhyme. Free verse poems have structure and organization but do not follow a unified traditional pattern. The poet creates the structure.

What is blank verse?

A

An old traditional form with set rules: unrhymed lines of ten syllables in iambic pentameter.

Shakespeare uses this form for most of his plays because it sounds like everyday speech.

What is a villanelle?

A

A highly structured nineteen-line poem with two repeating rhymes and two refrains. It consists of five tercets followed by a quatrain, with the first and third lines of the opening tercet repeated alternately in the last lines of the succeeding stanzas.
