What is an allusion?
Literary or historical references
Allusions can enhance the meaning of a text by connecting it to broader cultural or historical contexts.
Define apostrophe in literature.
A poetic phrase or speech made by a character that is addressed to a subject that is not literally present
The subject may be dead, absent, an inanimate object, or even an abstract idea.
What is a simile?
A comparison using ‘like’ or ‘as’
Similes create vivid imagery by linking two different things.
Define metaphor.
A comparison that doesn’t use ‘like’ or ‘as’
Metaphors can often be more extended and suggest deeper meanings.
What is personification?
Describing non-human things in human terms
This literary device helps to create relatable imagery and emotional connections.
What does tone refer to in literature?
The author or narrator’s attitude as expressed through the poem
Examples of tone include optimistic, fearful, melancholy, bitter, angry, etc.
