Forming, redistribution and addition processes Flashcards
Die cutters
Are used to cut out nets of papers or boards
Vacuum forming
Slow process involving a polymer being sucked onto a mould via a vacuum pump
Thermoforming
Plastic sheet is heated and placed between a positive and negative mould before being pushed together
Calendering
Calendering uses rollers to thin sheets of polymers into a thin film
Injection moulding
Used for complex items made from polymers and a hydraulic motor pushes the molten polymer into the mould.
Blow moulding
Used for making water bottles, molten polymer is placed into a mould and air is pumped into it making the material go to the sides of the mould
Rotational moulding
Is used for making cylindrical, symmetrical products. The polymer powder is placed into the mould and continuously turned until and even layer is coating the inside of the mould
Extrusion
Is used to make solid rods, hollow tubes and angles, the polymer is forced through a die to form the shape of the extrusion
