Forming bonds Flashcards
Name a property of an ionic compound?
High melting and boiling points - Ionic bonds are very strong - a lot of energy is needed to break them. So ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points.
Name another property of an ionic compound?
Conductive when liquid - Ions are charged particles, but ionic compounds can only conduct electricity if their ions are free to move. Ionic compounds do not conduct electricity when they are solid - only when dissolved in water or melted.
How are ionic compounds compounds formed?
An ionic compound is formed by the complete transfer of electrons from a metal to a nonmetal and the resulting ions have achieved an octet. The protons do not change. Metal atoms in Groups 1-3 lose electrons to non-metal atoms with 5-7 electrons missing in the outer level.
What is an ionic compound?
Ionic bonds form when a metal reacts with a non-metal. Metals form positive ions; non-metals form negative ions. Ionic bonds are the electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions.
How are molecular compounds formed?
When atoms of at least two different elements come together to form chemical bonds, these molecules can be called compounds. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is a classic example of an ionic compound, or compound formed by ionic bonds.
What happens when different elements combine?
They form compounds
