Formation: Filter Model Flashcards
Who created the filter model?
Kerckhoff and Davis 1962
What is the aim of the filters that we use?
narrow down field of availables: large group of people we could potentially have a relationship with, then to the filed of desirables: who we see as potential partners
What is the first filter of the model?
Social/demographic variables: unaware of influence, tend to mix with people who live near you/go to same work, people in different places/from different backgrounds rarely encountered, similar educational/economic background, social class, religion, ethnic group
What is the second filter of the model?
Similarity of attitudes and values: once people start going out, sharing ideas/beliefs communicating is easier, different interests may mean less time together
What is the third filter of the model?
Complementarity of emotional needs: once couple almost established in a relationship, how well they fit together, opposities
What study provides evidence for the second and third filters of the model?
Kerckhoff and Davis 1962: longitudinal, student couples together for 18m, several questionnaires over 7m report attitude similarity and personality traits with partner, attitude similarity most important up to 18m, after: meeting each others needs was important
What are the 2 studies that support the first filter?
Sprecher 1998: couples matched in attractiveness, social background and interests more likely to be long term
Gruber-Baldini 1995: longitudinal, 21+yrs old, similar education level and age more likely to stay together
Who provides evidence for the third filter of the model?
Winch 1958: happy marriages are often based on each partner’s ability to fulfil the needs of the other
Who used evidence of friends to provide support for the first and second filters of the model?
Newcomb 1961: free accommodation to male students, randomly allocated with room mates, most stable friendships between people from similar backgrounds and with similar attitudes
What is the practical application of the filter model?
Increase the pool of availables by having a large group of friends from different backgrounds, attend more social events to do this, improve efficiency of dating agencies: matched by socio/demographic, paragraph on emotional needs = increased income for agency
What are the methodological positives and negatives of research into the filter model?
K+D: based on self report, G-B: longitudinal but attrition? - less happy couples likely to drop out, Newcomb: friendships not relationships but random allocation, S: lots of similarities studied
