Formal
A language designed for use in situations in which natural (usually spoken) language is unsuitable. Typically used for written occasions such as assignments or letters.
Informal
Mainly used between people who know each other well / in relaxed and unofficial contexts, typically reflects speech

Means ‘status’ where language is concerned
NSE= carries less prestige / we associate SE with education and law
