what is the udhr
Universal declaration of HR 1948
- A declaration NOT TREATY, so its soft law
-holds all the 30 human rights to which every person is entitled too.
-inspired 200+ treaties and conventions
-although not formal it is deemed international customary law
What is the international Convenant on political and civil rights(1976)
States the following obligations:
* Right to life, to freedom of movement, fair trial, presumption of innocence until proven guilty
* Freedom of thought, conscience, speech, religion, marriage of choice
ICCPR contains monitoring and periodic reporting arrangements for member states. It is overseen by the Human rights Committee (a separate body from the HRC) which reports on compliance by member states and investigates violations.
Beginning of 2016 : ICCPR had been ratified- 168 states
what is the international convenant on economic, social and cultural rights
ICESPR was approved in 1966 and came into forces in 1976.
- It created an obligation on states to work towards granting economic, social, and cultural rights to individuals.
It mostly contributes to labour rights
