Form, Function & Homeostasis Flashcards
What is functional biology?
How an organism works
Is diffusion faster with a higher or lower SA : V ratio?
Higher
Do small organisms have a high or low SA : V ratio?
High
How do large animals diffuse?
Highly folded surfaces, circulatory system and interstitial fluid
What are the 4 types of animal tissue?
- Connective
- Epithelial
- Muscle
- Nervous
Which two systems coordinate homeostasis?
Nervous and endocrine
Explain the difference between regulators and conformers
Regulators: Constantly regulate their internal temp to stay at a certain range
Conformers: Propotional to external temp
Explain the difference between ectothermy and endothermy
Ectothermy: Tolerate temp fluctuations
Endothermy: Maintain their internal temp within a narrow range
Explain the difference between poikilotherms and homeotherms
Poikilotherms: variable body temp
Homeotherms: constant body temp
How do animals balance heat loss and gain?
- Insulation
- Circulatory adaptions (vasodilation/constriction)
- Cooling via evaporation
- Behaviour
- Adjusting metabolic heat loss
