Energetics Flashcards
What is the 2nd law of Thermodynamics?
The entropy of an isolated system will always increase over time
What are the 2 definitions of energy?
- The capacity to do work
2. The capacity to increase order
What is bioenergetics?
Energy flow and transformation in an animal
How do we measure metabolic rate?
Substances used or produced
What are the 5 factors influencing metabolic rate?
- Temperature
- Body Mass
- Physiology
- Activity
- Digestive state
What is the difference between basal and standard metabolic rate?
Basal is for an endothermic animal and is within their thermoneutral zone
Standard is for ectothermic animals and is at a specific temperature
Do smaller or larger animals have a higher metabolic rate?
Larger
What is the maximum metabolic rate (MMR)?
When MR increases with an increasing activity until the highest point
Does MR increase or decrease during the digestive process?
Increase
What is the specific dynamic action?
The amount of energy expenditure above the RMR for digestion
