Principal of government in which government derives its power from the people; idea of we the people
Popular sovereignty
Principle of government in which the power is divided between three branches: executive legislative and judicial
Separation of powers
Compromise between southern and northern states during the Constitutional convention in which only 3/5 of the population of slaves would be counted for determining taxation and representation
Three fifths compromise
Set up the method by which the United States territory could grow and expand in an orderly manner. Specifically it was passed for the Northwest territory
Northwest ordinance
Government where people elect others to speak and act on their behalf
