Definition
-the inability to recall something NOW that could be recalled any other time
-the more meaningful something is to you, the harder it will be to forget
Causes of forgetting (3 -listed)
-Encoding failure
-Decay
-interference
-Motivated forgetting
-Retrieval failure
Encoding failure
-info was never coded into our long-term memory
-passive (reading notes)= there will be an encoding failure (solution= quiz)
Decay
-if memories are not used they will fade over time
*for sensory and short-term memory only, NOT long-term
Interference
-Proactive: previously learned info interferes with the info you are trying to learn now
Retroactive: info learned now is interfering with trying to remember something
Life hints
-study before sleep
-space out study sessions
-don’t learn similar subjects back to back
Motivated forgetting
-protects from painful & upsetting experiences
-SUPPRESSION: conscious effort to put a memory out of mind, but aware that it happened
-REPRESSION: unpleasant memories removed from consciousness, and unaware that the event occured
Retrieval failure
-we are certain we know something but have trouble remembering it
-“tip of the tongue” phenomenon
