Forensics Week 03 Flashcards
What does age look at
Biological age, not time since death
What are the two phases of skull growth
1-skeletal/dental development (error range 1-3 years)
2-deterioration (less accurate)
What are the four grades of suture fusion
0-No fusion, open
1-Minimal closure
2-Significant closure
3-Complete obliteration
Can short term infections have an effect of the bones
No
What are the two different types of bones
Compact and spongy
What are the two main factors that determine how a bone breaks
Intrinsic and Extrinsic factors
What are Intrinsic factors
Bones capacity to absorb energy, bone stiffness, density and fatigue strength
What are Extrinsic factors
Direction of force, magnitude and duration of force, rate of force
Bone is visoelastic. What does this mean
bone is 1/3 as strong under compression as under tension
What bone is angled, it will fracture first under what
Tension
If the force is applied slowy….
the bone can handle more
What is plastic phase deformation
The point at which the bone can no longer return to it’s original shape
If the load is applied rapidly….
the bone will act as a brittle material
What will blunt force trauma result in
In bending compression at site and out bending tension as peripheral sites
Explain a fracture
A fracture will take the path of least resistance and will propagate until the energy is dissapated
