Define forensic psychiatry
Deals with the assessment and treatment of mentally disordered offenders
Psychiatric inpatient setting
Open ward - admission wards in local psychiatric hospitals
Low secure
Medium secure - have air locked entrances, unbreakable windows and high nurse to patient ratios with restraint training for staff
High secure - for those who present an immediate and grave danger to the general public because they are violent, unstable or dangerous
Risk factors for violence
Demographic
- male, young age, low socioeconomic status, lack of social support, access to weapons
Personal
- past history, substance misuse and alcohol abuse, major psychiatric illness, difficult upbringing, impulsivity
