- Mary Queen of Scotland was Elizabeth’s cousin
- she was married to Prince Francis of France
- she and Francis became rulers of France following the death of Henry II
- Francis died in 1560, and Mary returned to Scotland

Securing the Scottish border
A
- Elizabeth wanted to make sure that the Scottish/English border was secure so as to prevent any invasions by Scottish and French forces
- English navy went to Firth of Forth to stop French troops from landing in December of 1559

Support for the Scottish rebellion
A
- Elizabeth supported the Scottish rebellion against Mary of Guise, regent to Scotland
- The rebellion was led by John Knox and other Scottish Noblemen, known as the Lords of the Congregation
- the noblemen formed a parliament after seizing power, and reformed the church of Scotland
- due to Elizabeth’s support for this rebellion, the Scottish threat was reduced

Treaties of Edinburgh and Cateau-Cambresis

- the treaty of Edinburgh was signed between Scotland, England and France in 1560
- put an end to the Lords of the Congregation rebellion
- ended Auld Alliance between Scotland and France, which reduced the threat that these countries posed on England
- The Treaty of Cateau-Cambresis was also signed around the same time, securing peace between England and France
- these two treaties demonstrate Elizabeth’s desire to avoid going into a costly war, and keeping peace with England’s nearby countries

France’s reduced threat to England in 1562
A
- French were involved in a religious war in 1562
- this was a conflict between the Protestant Huguenots and the Catholics
- due to this internal fighting, France was less of a threat to England
