A
- there was support for catholicism, demonstrated by the speed with which the reunification of the Church of England with Rome took place under Mary I
- however, there was also much protestant support
- there were also internal divisions within the protestant community since the theological doctrine had not be wholly decided on

A
- there was instability as a result of the several different religious opinions
- countries on the continent were involved in civil wars due to religious conflict, and Elizabeth I did not want this

Elizabeth’s temporary religious legislation
A
- Elizabeth I made a royal proclamation in 1558 which forbade preaching or using public prayers which weren’t approved by law
- this was put in place until Parliament could agree on a new legislation
- attempts to reform religious settlement were hindered by opposition from catholics
