France- Treaty of Cateau Cambresis
April 1559
-France would retain Calais for 8 years
-It would then be returned to England if they kept peace for that amount of time
-IF France failed to return Calais, they had to pay 500,000 crowns (125,000) to England
-Phillip II nor Henry II couldn’t continue to fight
How are Scotland and France linked?
-Henry II King of France died in 1559
-His son Francis II married Mary Queen of Scots
Intervention in Scotland
-Francis II succession brought the strongly Catholic Guise faction to power, who wanted to use Scotland as an instrument of French policy
-Conflict broke out between the French troops + John Knox who was the leader of the Scottish reformation + his political allies the Lords Congregation
Why was Elizabeth reluctant to intervene in Scotland?
-She was cautious about interfering in the domestic affairs of another country where subjects were rebelling against a sovereign authority
-Was afraid it would give ideas to her own subjects to rebel against her
Why did Cecil support an intervention in Scotland?
-Sympathised w the Scottish Protestants + knew England would be secure w/o France in the north
-Wanted the removal of Mary Queen of Scots to incorporate Scotland into a wider imperial state, which he considered necessary for the survival of Protestant England—> faced opposition from Sir Nicholas Bacon
