Alaska purchased from Russia in 1867. It expanded the US coastline, maintained good relations with Russia and Seward felt that the development of Alaskan harbors might provide a gateway to Northern Asia
Why was their tensions between the USA and Britain/Canada?
Tensions between the USA and Britain/Canada because they supported the Confederacy in the Civil War. Britain built Confederate ships in dockyards. USA demanded compensation from Britain and wanted to ask for $2 billion. Canada became a dominion in 1867 and the USA retaliated by allowing Fenian’s into Canada and raiding. Anglo-American dispute was settled in 1872 when Britain agreed to pay $15.5 million to the USA for the damage caused by Confederate
ships
