What did the Civil Rights Bill (1866) do?
Vetoed by Johnson but overturned by Congress. Gives minimum rights to African-Americans
What was in the 14th Amendment (1868)?
All citizens granted equality under the law and
citizenship. Opposed by ex-Confederate states (except Tennessee) and failed to get the 75% approval from the states for it to be law.
What did the Military Reconstruction Bill (1867) say?
Military rule in the 10 Southern states. States
grouped into 5 military districts and placed under a federal commander. To get back into the Union, the states had to elect national conventions which would accept black suffrage and the 14th Amendment.
What did the Command of the Army Act do?
Reduced Johnson’s military powers
What did the Tenure of Office Act do?
Prevented Johnson removing office-holders
