Airway

A
  • Hx - type, time, pain, dysphagia, breathing
  • Examination - tongue base, tonsils, neck
  • Investigation - lateral neck XR, CXR?
  • Assess airway risk
  • If trying to remove have ‘one good try’
    • Good restraint
    • Good light
    • Good instrument
  • If fails GA?
  • Button batteries ASAP

Ears

A
  • More common in school aged children
  • Do not attempt to remove unless have appropriate skill and equiptment
  • Button batteries need removed ASAP
  • Insects should be drowned (spirit drops/olive oil)
  • Inspect EAC and TM post removal
  • Methods include:
    • Syringing
    • Suctioning
    • Fine hook
  • Uncomplicated perforations usually heal in 6 weeks and do not require review
