Q
  • Force of repulsion if particles have the same charge.
    Example: proton (+) – proton (+)
    or
    electron (-) – electron(-)
  • Force of attraction if particles have different charges.

Q
  • Opposes the electromagnetic force.
  • “Glue” that holds protons together in the nucleus.
  • Only works when particles are very close together.
  • Is the greatest of the four forces but it has a limited range.

Q

The weak force

A
  • Associated with radioactivity.
  • Radioactive decay (beta decay):
Example: A neutron in the nucleus breaks down and turns into a proton and an electron. The electron is shot out of the atom and the proton remains in the nucleus.

neutron → proton + electron
