Forces Within The Atom Flashcards
0
Q
- Force of repulsion if particles have the same charge.
Example: proton (+) – proton (+)
or
electron (-) – electron(-) - Force of attraction if particles have different charges.
Example: proton(+) – electron (-)
A
Electromagnetic force
1
Q
Four forces within the atom
A
1. Electromagnetic force
2. The strong force
3. The weak force
4. Gravity
2
Q
*The _________ is the force that keeps electrons in orbit around the nucleus of the atom.
A
electromagnetic force
3
Q
- Opposes the electromagnetic force.
- “Glue” that holds protons together in the nucleus.
- Only works when particles are very close together.
- Is the greatest of the four forces but it has a limited range.
A
The strong torxe
4
Q
The weak force
A
- Associated with radioactivity.
- Radioactive decay (beta decay):
Example: A neutron in the nucleus breaks down and turns into a proton and an electron. The electron is shot out of the atom and the proton remains in the nucleus.
neutron → proton + electron
5
Q
- Weakest force known in nature.
- Force of attraction exterted between all objects in nature.
- Role of gravity in atom not clearly understood.
A
Gravity
