Forces Test Flashcards
- What is a force
A push or pull exerted on an object in order to change the motion of the object force has size and direction
- What is inertia
The tendency of an object to resist being moved or if the object is moving to resist a change in speed or direction until an outside force acts on the object
- What SI unit is measured to measure force
Newtons
- Name the two properties of force
Direction and magnitude
- How are forces calculated when they are in the same direction
They are added together
- How are forces calculated when they are in different direction
Subtract the smaller force from the bigger one
12N- 10N= 2N
9.What is a balanced force
When the object goes at a constant speed or its stopped
- What is tension and compression
Tension is a force that is exerted when matter is pulled or stretched. Compression is a force that is exerted when matter is pushed or squeezed.
- A force on an object can be balanced even if the object is in motion
True
- What will an unbalanced force cause.
Cause a change of velocity in an object
13How will an unbalanced force change a moving object
It can make the object go faster or slower or change direction
- How will an unbalanced force change a static object?
It will change by it will make the object start to move or cause a moving object to slow down and stop moving
- What will an unbalanced force acting in the opposite direction do to something that is moving forward
The object will slow down
- Define friction
A force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are in contact
- What causes friction
Rough surfaces hills and valleys stick to other hills and valleys
18.What are 2 factors that affect the magnitude of frictional force
Force pushing surfaces together
Materials that make up the surface
19.Why does it take less force to slide a light book across a table than a heavy books
Because the heavy book has more weight and is more rough
- Does the surface area of an object affect the fictional force
No
- Does the friction increase or decrease when the surface of an object slides across become rough
Increase
22.What is kinetic friction
Friction between moving surfaces
23.What is static friction
Friction between non-moving surfaces
- Is there any frictional force if there is no force applied to an object
No
- How can static friction be overcome
Applying a large amount of force
- What replaces static friction when an object begins moving
Kinetic friction
- The 3 ways friction can be reduced is….
Lubricants, switching from sliding kinetic friction to rolling, and smooth surfaces that rub against each other
- The 2 ways friction can be increased are
Make surfaces rougher and increase the force of pushing objects together
