Forces & Motion Flashcards
What is Momentum?
The amount of movement an object has
What is the equation for momentum?
Momentum = mass x velocity
What are the units for momentum?
Kilograms metres per second (Kgm/s)
What is the principle of conservation of momentum?
In a closed system, the total momentum before an event is equal to the total momentum after the event
What are the two types of events?
Collisions and explosions
What is deformation?
When a force acts upon an object but it can’t move, the object changes shape
What are examples of deformation?
Bending, stretching and compressing
What is elastic deformation?
An object that returns to its original shape after being deformed
Examples of elastic deformation
Bending a trainer sole, squish ball compressing when hit, stretching an elastic band
What is inelastic deformation?
An object that is deformed and doesn’t return to its original shape
Examples of inelastic deformation
Bending tin foil, snapping an elastic band, squishing a loaf of bread
What is the equation of elastic potential energy?
Elastic potential energy = 0.5 x spring constant x (extension x extension)
What does spring constant tell us?
How stiff a spring is
What happens if the spring is really stiff?
The spring constant increases
What happens if the spring is not stiff at all?
The spring constant decreases
