Encomienda System

A

Conquistadores are given land (haciendas) and whoever lives on the land becomes your servants. Have them work the land, and convert them to God. Tax them with what they produce. Mestizo’s are created from intermarrying from European and natives.

Rebellion 1680

A

Pope’s Rebellion/Pueblo Revolt 1680 pushes the Spanish out. Not many Spanish in this area, and Pope fights back, killing priests, getting rid of churches. Left alone for a decade. Black legend- people believe that all Spain is doing is being savages. they re-insert themselves back into New Spain, and let the natives have their culture as long as they pay lip service

Colonization Limited

A

French Protestants left France because of Catholic rule. People want to use the land for money, and trade off the natives. Coureurs de Bois were fur traders. Natives traded pelts for European goods. Depletion of beaver numbers as intertribal warfare happens as there are limited resources to trade.
