Jamestown

A

Starts with 104 men, and in January, 08’, 38 survivors. “Do no harm to the naturals”. John Smith isn’t a gentlemen and knows what he’s doing. The men are spending all their time finding gold, not trading or making food. “he shall not work shall not eat”. Organizes raiding parties and raids Powhatan tribe. Pocahontas and Smith becomes friends and creates a truce.

“Starving Time” Winter 1609-10

A

9 more ships go to Jamestown, 1 ship gets broken, another is stranded. Many die off immediately, not have enough food. A lot of indentured servants, natives surrounded the colonists in the bunker. as they’re about to leave with 60 people left, Lord De la Warr comes on the stranded ship and refuses to let them leave. “State of perpetual war”. Military colony.

Tobacco and John Rolfe

A

Perfects marketable strain of tobacco. Indentured servants, sold to wealthy land owners, given land of their own after a time stamp. Headright system- wealthy guy in England can invest/ pay for an indentured servant, you get 50 acres of land, so they pay for families. 1619, slaver, Dutch slave ship sold around 20 slaves. Treated as indentured servants.

First representative assembly, rights of Englishmen. Sets a precedent that we have a right to representative form of government.

1st Anglo-Powhatan War 1610-1614

A

State of perpetual war. Irish Tactics, ruin their food sources and crops, burn villages. Pocahontas falls in love with John Rolfe. They get married and ends the 1st war.

More and more people come from Europe as tobacco production expands. Pushing the natives even further back. Continue to take more land and push them out of the way. Sets precedent for how we’re going to treat natives from then on.

A

Catholic and English is under protestant rule. Granted a colony. Major source of income is Tobacco. Large estates inhibited by Catholics, but they need people to work the land. Indentured servants are protestant, so you have more protestants than Catholics= fear. Need to make sure they can practice their own religion.
Act of Toleration 1649- if you are any type of Christian or Catholic, you can practice how you want.

English Takeover

A

Spain lost power in Jamaica, and gets taken over by English in 1655. Sugar plantations, wealthy persons crop. Arduous process to process it. Creates plantation system, called Barbados Slave Code to keep them under control. They dehumanize them, and sets a precedent for how slaves are treated in the future.

The Carolinas

A

by 1670, you have founding of Carolinas. Poor farmers finding places to go. People in the west indies need food, so Carolinas grow food for west indies. Rice, indigo, providing foodstuff. Barbados slave code is brought to Carolinas when the slaves are, so thye can work the land

Florida is Spanish Territory

Used as a buffer state from Florida, to separate Spain and English territory. Receives money from the crown to protect the other states. Have religious toleration for everyone accept Catholics.
