forces in balance Flashcards
define displacement
displacement is the distance travveled without a change in direction or distance in a certain direction
what is a vector quantity
a vector quanitity has both a dircection and a magnitude
what is a scalar quantity
a scalar quantity has a magnitude (size) but no direction
what 3 things can a force do to an object
change shape, motion or state of rest
what is newtons third law of motion
newtons third law of motion states that when two objects interact they exert equal and opposite forces on eachother
what is the unit of force
Newtons
what is a contact and non contact force
a contact force requires the objects to physically touch eachother for example friction whereas a non contact force happens without any contact fpor example gravity
what is newtons first law of motion
newtons first law of motion states that if the forces acting on an object are equal (the resultant force is 0) then the object is either at rest (stationary) or will continue to move at the same speed and the same direction
what is the resultant force acting on an object
the resultant force is the sum of all forces acting on an object
what is a moment
a moment is the turning effect of a force
what is the formula for a moment
moment = force x perpendicular distance from pivot
how do you multiply forces
a lever can be used to multiply force as the further distance from pivot the higher the output force a
and gears can be used as a full rotation of a large gear will turn a smaller gear multiple times
how do you calculate the moment on a gear
moment = force x gear wheel radius
what is the center of mass of an object
the center of mass of an object is the point at which it mass can be thought of as being concentrated
where is the center of mass of a regular polygon
in the center
